Imran Khan cannot hold prime minister office | Notification issued

Following the dissolution of the National Assembly by President Arif Alvi on Sunday, the Cabinet issued a statement declaring that Imran Khan no longer had the office of prime minister.

“The result of the dissolution of the National Assembly is the president of Pakistan, in terms of Section 58 (1) read with Article 48 (1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, by SRO No. 487 of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs 1) / 2022, dated 3 April 2022, Mr. Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi has resigned from the Office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan immediately, ”the statement said.

Although Imran Khan has been removed from office as prime minister, he can remain in office for at least 15 days until the new prime minister is appointed under Article 224.

However, it is unclear how the new prime minister will be appointed following the dissolution of the National Assembly - and the people who have appointed the caretaker Prime Minister, the opposition leader in the National Assembly, and the Prime Minister, are no longer in office.

Although Imran Khan may continue to be prime minister for some days, he will not be empowered to make decisions that may be made by the head of state.
