Omer Sarfraz Cheema took oath as Governer Punjab

The Punjab Assembly (PA) meeting on Sunday was postponed to April 6 (Wednesday) without a vote to elect a new House leader between the opposition and government legislatures.

The provincial assembly was due to vote today to elect a new House leader, and it is expected that Chaudhry Parvez Elahi of PML-Q, supported by PTI, and Hamza Shehbaz of PML-N, who received the support of Jahangir Khan Tarin (JKT). heads straight in the race for the next prime minister.

Elahi said the conference was adjourned following the "attack" of opposition MPAs on finance ministry lawyers.

"Our members went to the lawyers selected for the PTI tickets to bring them to the venue where they were staying but then another [opposition] party attacked them. journalists outside the Punjab Council.

He accused opposition parties of creating a riot and disrupting the proceedings.

In a question about the ouster of Governor Punjab, the PML-Q leader said he had had good relations with Sarwar since 2000, adding "I will not say anything about him."

He stressed that the government has the necessary numbers [to elect a new prime minister].

Elahi said PTI opposition members Aleem Khan and Jahangir Tareen were now "lost and without PIN", adding that "they now have to live happily in London".

He told reporters that the situation would be clear on April 6.

Ahead of today’s Punjab Conference session, the conference media gallery was closed, preventing journalists from writing continuously.

The PA session took place at the same time that a session of the National Assembly had to vote on a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan. Finally, no two votes were cast as the NA's no-confidence motion was overturned by Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri, who decided against Article 5 of the Constitution.

PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique saw the postponement of the session as "unconstitutional".

Earlier, the coalition government, surprisingly, fired Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar from office hours before the provincial assembly. He was later replaced by Omar Sarfraz Cheema, the former PTI information secretary.

The top ministerial post in the largest province opened with the resignation of Punjab Prime Minister Usman Buzdar by Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar on Friday.

The Punjab government has issued a notice to CM Buzdar after accepting his resignation but the same notice allowed him to "continue in office until his successor in office". In several notices, the provincial government also named all 37 provincial ministers, five prime minister's advisers, and five prime minister's aides.

Buzdar submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 28 after a team of senior lawmakers filed a no-confidence motion with Punjab Council Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti later that day.

Following Buzdar's resignation, the PTI had announced Chaudhry Pervez Elahi of the PML-Q as the next prime minister of Punjab. The move comes as the ruling party intensifies efforts to secure support for its allies ahead of a vote of no confidence in the prime minister, against a backdrop of many PTI allies joining opposition parties. The PML-Q, a key PTI government coalition in Punjab and Center, with 10 and 5 seats respectively, has confirmed its support for the ruling party.

Following the announcement of the PTI, the PML-N finalized the name of Hamza Shehbaz in place of the CM after the approval of party leader Nawaz Sharif.

To be elected prime minister, a candidate will need at least 186 votes in a 371-member house. At the Punjab meeting, PTI has 183 legal representatives, PML-Q 10, PML-N 165, seven PPPs, five independent, and one from Rah-i-Haq.

Determining factor

A decisive factor in today's vote is the support of the Jahangir Tareen party, a coalition of about 16 dissatisfied PTI legislators.

Members of the Jahangir Tareen faction ‘pulled the speed’ on the PML-Q yesterday where, after nightly negotiations with the Elahi's, they chose to throw weight behind the opposition camp.

This has created a busy schedule for the ruling party led by Parvez Elahi.

PML-Q leaders led by Moonis Elahi have been in meetings with members of the Jahangir Tareen group until 2.30 am on Saturday to finalize the terms of their application.

However, a tweet by former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in a few hours changed the whole situation. "We had good final talks with Jahangir Khan Tareen and it was agreed that the Tareen party would support the candidate in partnership with Hamza Shehbaz Sharif instead of the prime minister," Dar tweeted.

Moonis Elahi said former Punjab minister Nauman Langrial pledged overnight when 12 of the 17 members agreed to vote for Parvez Elahi. Langrial has also pledged to convince the remaining five members, ”Moonis Elahi told Dawn.

Moonis said he contacted three members of the Tareen party and gained support, which was announced publicly. Three members - Abdul Haye Dasti, Rafaqat Ali Gillani, and Ameer Mohammad Khan - also met Parvez Elahi in his Punjab Conference Room.

While PTI defender and former prime minister Aleem Khan re-demonstrated the strength of the nine MPAs in the PML-N CM representative Hamza Shehbaz who visited the former minister in his office on Saturday, Elahi said some of them would voice clear support.

But on Sunday, three members of the Aleem Khan party - Ashraf Rind, Aun Dogar, and Mian Alamdar Qureshi - appeared in the Punjab Assembly with Moonis Elahi.
